Beyond the studied forms of the series, this is work made on site — inside fabrication halls and building ways, among the structures and machinery at the scale they were meant to be seen. It is the direction the practice is moving toward, and selected work will appear here as it is made.

The photographs in this series were created during professional access granted by the Deutsches Museum. Working within the museum's engineering and technology collections, the project explores industrial modernism through studies of structure, precision, materials, and form.

Steel Stacks
III.

Steel Stacks

This series was photographed among the surviving blast furnaces of the former Bethlehem Steel works — studies of the structures that outlasted the industry they served. From 1893 to 2003, Bethlehem Steel products were used in the construction of many of the most famous structures in the USA and played an instrumental role in the manufacture of US ships during World Wars I and II.

Commissions

I photograph on commission for shipyards, equipment manufacturers, and other industrial organizations. Each assignment is scoped individually: location, access and security requirements, duration, travel, how the photographs will be used, and the number of finished images. The work is made the way everything on this site is made — on site, from a tripod, in available light, in black and white.
